11/20/2023 0 Comments Accelerated reader spine labels![]() Often he would come back after reading a chapter and say, "I'm not really understanding it." (I actually prepared a list of Matt Christopher books that were in his range to take to the school library (where the books are NOT coded) - he was so cute going off with his library pass and his list.) I think that giving kids the reading level helps most students learn to find those good fit books. I might say, "That's a little higher than your other books, but why don't you try it and check back with me?" or "I think that looks like a good fit for you since you did so well on _ which is about the same level." He still had a choice unless I knew it was a futile effort. ![]() For example, I had a student who loved sports books and regularly selected Matt Christopher books. I have also found that students learn their range by comparing the levels of books they've read to new books. I find this helps me tremendously in approving books before a child starts to read a book that is way too high. I use three colors for different ranges of books. The label is address-sized, and the only disadvantage is that it sometimes goes over part of the title, but it doesn't seem to bother the kids. I make my labels in Word and then tape them on the front cover with packing tape. I use neon-colored labels with my name (so it gets returned to my room if it's lost), the AR reading level, and the number of points. I am posting this hoping I will follow through and do this! Ask me how this is going in a month! This summer I am: going to organize my books into levels and themes, on the book case so they are available to the students. My library in a bookshelf in a big mess of organized chaos, ~~ which is under construction. They can pick books from there, so they aren't pillaging through my mess of a library. ![]() Every two weeks, I take books from my chaotic library and from the school library in their tubs and put them in their tub. Last year I did this: I have independent book tubs, each reading group has their own tub. Then, my third year I did this:I put a foil star sticker on the top of the spine, reinforced with a piece of scotch tape if the book is Reading Counts Quiz book.ĭuring the summer of my third year I set this up: They are in my library database on and labeled/tagged there more extensively~ such as genre, theme, month, teaching concept, books on cassette, the list goes on! If there is no guided reading level to be found anywhere on the www, then I don't put a level. I started this my second year teaching: I did the I put a colored dot (doesn't matter the color), reinforced w/tape with the Guided Reading Level.
